We want to steer clear of anything that resembles “construction” on Shabbos, so we don’t install a plank in an opening of a house, nor fill a breach in a fence with thorns unless these objects have already been set up for that purpose. Do they need to be tied and suspended? What about arranging a wood pile for a cooking fire on a Festival? May we use a key to lock a door while standing in the public domain? May we use a bolt to secure a door if the bolt is not attached to the door or frame?
