The Mishna says we may move a vessel for a specific purpose and not for a specific purpose on Shabbos. What is a specfic purpose? Now we sharpen our thinking as we trace the argument between Rabba and Rava. Ultimately we hold like Rava: we move a permitted use (on Shabbos) object for its use, for its place, or to preserve it from damage. A prohibited use (on Shabbos) object we move for its use or for its place, but not to save it from damage. From Rava’s conversation with Rav Mari bar Rachel, we learn that certain laws are different depending on your sub-community within the observant Jewish world, and we still see this today. For example some hold by an eruv and some don’t. With regard to shards that came into being on Shabbos, we move them if they have some useful purpose or to prevent harm. Otherwise we don’t move them because they are “nolad” – newly existent on Shabbos.
