FInishing Ch. 14 and opening Ch. 15. We may not drink vinegar for a toothache on Shabbos because people don’t drink vinegar. But we may dip bread in it and eat and if it heals, it heals. We may not smear wine and vinegar on the loins for healing, but we may smear oil because the former is only for healing and the latter is a typical use. Rose oil is only permitted for rich people since all others only use it only for healing. Rabbi Shimon says all Israel are the children of kings, and so they may use rose oil on Shabbos, but the halacha is that people may only smear rose oil on themselves in places where it is commonly used by healthy people. We may not tie or untie professional, permament knots on Shabbos, and if one does one is liable to bring a sin offering. We may tie or untie common knots like the bow on shoelaces. Tying or untying a permanent, non-professional knot or a professional, temporary knot on Shabbos is prohibited by rabbinic decree.
