Chapter 2, Mishna 5 Examining a strange ruling that if a priest plants tamei teruma saplings, the resulting growth is tahor but prohibited. The issue at first seems to turn on whether the planting can be considered a “Diversion of Attention” i.e. leaving consecrated foods unguarded, and whether DoA disqualifies due to an inherent disqualification or the mere possibility of that the food became tamei while unguarded. Ultimately, however, we learn that the saplings remain prohibited to the priest because the purification of planting does not work on consecrated foods, as we learn from the water libation of Sukkot.
