Chapter 5, Mishna 3 Rabbi Abba offered a pretty good rationale for the law that the bread baked by a woman during a festival, using water and salt borrowed from another woman has the same Shabbos boundaries as BOTH of the women, meaning the bread can only travel to a place that both of the women can walk to on the Festival. But the Sages of Israel laughed at him. We carefully unpack the issues at stake, and finally come to some better rationales for this law. But they still shouldn’t have laughed at Rabbi Abba.
