Stan Gottlieb is shipwrecked and he spends thirty years alone on a deserted island.
Finally, a passing ship sees his bonfire and sends a rescue party. Curious how Stan spent thirty years all by himself, the captain comes ashore and gets a tour of the island. He sees the hut, the tools, the cooking utensils.
The captain asks Stan, “What did you do for thirty years to keep yourself from going insane?”
Stan says, “I’ll show you.”
They walk through the jungle, and they come to a clearing where there’s a magnificent synagogue like a European cathedral.
“Oh, I see. It must’ve taken you thirty years to build that by hand!”
“Fifteen, actually. I’ll show you what I did for the next fifteen.”
They walk through the jungle to another clearing, and they find another magnificent synagogue.
“I understand the need to keep busy, but why two synagogues?”
“The first one, I pray in it every day. The second one, I would never set foot in that place!”
