The Rebbe Was Hiring

Why Was He Picked?

The Berditchever Rebbe needed a Rosh Hashanah shofar blower, and three men applied for the job.

Which one did he hire?

The first candidate was a young Torah scholar with big lungs. His blasts were not only powerful, but he was well versed in all the intricate laws of shofar blowing.

The second candidate had decades of experience and was also a Kabbalist, deeply attuned to the mystical ramifications of every shofar blast in both this world and the upper world.

After realizing who he was up against, the third candidate wanted to leave, but the Rebbe pulled him in for his interview. He said, “Rebbe, I’m just a simple Jew. I have daughters to marry off, and I’m too poor to provide for their dowries. When I blow the shofar, I say in my heart, ‘Father in Heaven, I submit to your will, and I am blowing for you the shofar. Please, if you could, do the same for me. Send me good husbands for my daughters.'”

The Rebbe smiled and said, “You’re the man for us.”

And the question is, why?
